CMS Men's Swimming and Diving Earns Clean Sweep in Road Win over Whittier

WHITTIER, Calif. - The CMS men's swimming and diving team won every event as it cruised to a 251-36 road win over Whittier on Saturday afternoon in a SCIAC meet.

The win improves the Stags to 4-1 in the SCIAC and 4-5 overall (although two of the losses were to programs in transition to Division I - Cal Baptist and UC San Diego - and the other three were to teams in the top 10 of Division III). 

The day started with junior All-American Kendall Hollimon capturing the diving events, earning 332.7 points in the one-meter and 371.15 in the three-meter. The Stags then opened the swimming by taking the top three spots in the 200 medley relay, with the A team of junior Dave Makhervaks, freshman Christian Simon, senior Jackson Crewe and sophomore Marco Conati winning in 1:37.29. 

The individual swimming events started with the 1000, with freshman Matthew Waddell coming in just under the 10-minute mark (9:59.68) to take first place. Junior Alex Moody followed with a first-place finish in the 200 free, which was followed by wins from senior Aaron Lutzker in the 100 back (54.04), senior Tyler Welty in the 100 breast (58.79) and senior John Everett in the 200 fly (1:54.97). 

Junior Bradley Newton edged out teammate Dave Makervaks in a very close race in the 50 free (22.30 to 22.33) and after an intermission, Conati made it a sprint sweep by winning the 100 free in 48.01. 

Senior John Jeang (pictured) took first in the 200 back, and Simon followed with a win in the 200 breast (2:12.13). Junior Henry Limm edged out senior Jacob Eynon by just six-hundredths of a second in the 500 (4:55.57 to 4:55.63), and Lutzker added his second individual win in the 100 fly (51.91). Makhervaks, who finished a close second to his teammates in his first two events, then got an individual title of his own with a 1:58.51 in the 200 IM, beating his seed time by more than a full second. 

CMS finished off the sweep with a win in the 200 free relay, as Simon, Crewe, sophomore Andreas Roeseler and sophomore Daniel Hayon earning the fastest time with a 1:28.37. 

The Stags will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to Redlands for another SCIAC meet, beginning at 10:30 a.m.
