Men's Swimming and Diving Cruises Past Chapman for Win in SCIAC Opener

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's swimming and diving team first place in all but one event as it opened up SCIAC play with a 235-56 win over Chapman on Saturday at Axelrood Pool.

The Stags move to 1-3 on the year in dual competition, and 1-0 in the league, after opening up with a difficult non-conference schedule that included UC San Diego, Washington University and the University of Chicago. 

Senior Tyler Welty (pictured) picked up wins in both breaststroke events, taking first in the 100 with a 58.07 and then adding a win in the 200 with a 2:10.30. Freshman Michael Lee won both the 1650 and the 200-yard freestyle, finishing in 1:46.04 in the 200 right after wrapping up his win in the 1650. Sophomore Marco Conati had a pair of wins in the 100 back (53.95) and the 100 fly (51.92). 

Sophomore Andreas Roeseler took first in the 50 free with a 21.53, and freshman Matthew Waddell ended up first in the 200 fly with a 1:55.31. Freshman Nick Tan captured the 200 back in 1:54.18, and junior Henry Limm earned the 500 free with a 4:48.60. Freshman Andrew Bradjan earned first in the final individual competition with a 4:09.82 in the 400 IM. 

The Stags capped off the meet by winning the 200-yard freestyle relay, as the team of Conati, junior Dave Makhervaks, sophomore Daniel Hayon and Roeseler finishing in 1:26.48. 

CMS will be back in action next week for a tri-meet with Occidental and Caltech at 10 a.m. at Axelrood Pool.
