Swimming and Diving Opens Season With Strong Showing at UC San Diego

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - On Saturday afternoon the Clarmemont-Mudd-Scripps swimming and diving teams opened the 2017-18 season with a trip to UC San Diego to take on the Division II Tritons.

The No. 14 Stags dropped a close 148-135 match against the No. 7 team in Division II, while the No. 16 Athenas fell by a 175-114 final against the No. 10 (DII) Tritons.

Saturday's meet marks the 10th-straight season that the Stags and Athenas have opened the season against UC San Diego.

On the men's side, sophomore Henry Limm (HMC) highlighted the day for the Stags with victories in the 100 and 200 breaststroke. First, Limm claimed the 100 breaststroke in a time of 57.68. In that race he turned in both the fastest opening 50 and fastest second 50 to claim the victory by almost two seconds. Later he won the 200 breaststroke in a time of 2:04.12, seven seconds ahead of teammate Aaron Lutzker (HMC). Lutzker finished in a time of 2:11.05.

In the 200 IM, Lutzker got the best of his teammate Limm edging him by just .17. Lutzker finished in 1:57.78, just a fingertip ahead of Limm who got to the wall in 1:57.95.

In the 50 freestyle, freshman Patricio Madero (CMC) made his college debut by taking second-place in the event by just .14. Madero finished in a time of 21.85, just behind Sawyer Farmer (21.71) of UC San Diego.

Sophomore Kendall Hollimon (CMC) swept both the one and three meter diving competitions. Hollimon scored a 261.22 to beat out UC San Diego's Trevor Jackson (242.92) by almost 20 points.

On the women's side, Maia Presti (SC) and Nia-Renee Cooper (SC) finished second and third in the one meter diving competition with scores of 230.75 and 205.85, respectively.

In the lanes, the Athenas best showing came from sophomore Jocelyn Crawford (CMC) in the 100 backstroke. Crawford got to the wall in 58.34 to take first in the race ahead of Alexandra Rodman of UC San Diego (58.91).

Both the Stags and Athenas will be back in action next weekend when they take on the alumni of the swimming and diving programs. The Alumni Meet is scheduled to begin on Nov. 4 at 11:00 a.m.
