Women’s 200 medley relay places 11th at Nationals

SHENDANDOAH, Texas – After qualifying for the finals with a 1:44.34, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's 200-yard medley relay team placed 11th with a time of 1:43.92 in the NCAA National Championships. With the win, the Athenas earned 12 points toward the team total. CMS swam in two relays and five individual events on Wednesday.

The team of senior Kelly Ngo (CMC), freshman Claire Bacon-Brenes (SC), senior Stephanie Doi (CMC), and freshman Jocelyn Crawford (CMC) came into the Championships seeded No. 13 for the 200 medley relay. They swam almost exactly their seed time (1:43.88) in the finals and earned 11th place.

The men's 200 medley relay of senior Matthew Williams (CMC), sophomore Jackson Crewe (HMC), senior Graham Spurzem (CMC), and freshman Ben Culberson (CMC) were not as fortunate, finishing at No. 22 in the prelims at 1:32.20.

In the prelims for the 500-yard freestyle, freshman Culberson missed qualifying for the finals by just one second. He swam it in 4:31.99, barely off the cut for the finals and less than half a second behind Benjamin Brewer from Cal Lutheran. On the women's side, Elizabeth Carrade (CMC) was No. 26 in the prelims with a time of 2:15.74.

Doi and Bacon-Brenes also competed in the 200-yard individual medley. Doi were 2:07.11 for 26th place while Bacon-Brenes swam 2:16.74. Additionally, Crawford competed in the 50-yard freestyle prelim and posted the No. 26 best time at 23.77.

The events for Thursday are the 200-yard freestyle relay, 400-yard IM, 100-yard butterfly, 200 free, men's 1-meter diving and then the 400 medley relay.
