Athenas extend their lead while Stags are neck-and-neck in day two of SCIAC Championships
COMMERCE, Calif. – After the second day of the SCIAC Championships for swimming and diving, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athenas have a 162 point lead while the Stags trail by a mere 32 points.
The day got started with a big win on the 3-meter board by freshman Kendall Hollimon (CMC). His score of 611.20 was over 130 points higher than the next finisher and just 16.4 below the meet record set by CMS' James Stevick in 2015.
A CMS sweep in the women's 500-yard freestyle got the swimming started. Junior Elizabeth Carrade (CMC) swam the third fastest time in program history at 5:01.17 and was eight seconds faster in the finals than earlier in the prelims. She was closely followed by junior Lauren Rosenberger (CMC, 5:04.60) and freshman Shannon Steele (CMC, 5:06.43), who also improved their collegiate personal bests in the program's top-10.
On the men's side, freshman Ben Culberson (CMC) won the 500 free at 4:28.89, just 0.3 seconds off the meet record.
CMS went two-three in the women's 200-yard individual medley as Redlands' Ellie Jaques earned the win. Senior Stephanie Doi (CMC) swam 2:06.31 and freshman Ivy Chen (HMC) jumped into the top-10 at No. 6 with the time of 2:08.25. Sophomore Aaron Lutzker (CMC) followed that performance up with a very tight win in the men's 200 IM, beating Samuel To from Pomona-Pitzer by 0.21 seconds. Lutzker's 1:51.24 led five Stags who finished in the top-9.
In her first SCIAC Swim & Dive Championships, freshman Jocelyn Crawford (CMC) set a meet and CMS record in the 50-yard freestyle with a blazing 23.34.
In the final event of the day, the CMS women's "A" relay won the 200-yard freestyle (1:34.99). The team of senior Kelly Ngo (CMC), Crawford, Doi and sophomore Emma Stacy (SC) now rank No. 5 in the program's top-10. Crawford swam the fastest split at an impressive 23.33 that bested her own swim in the 50 free just two events prior.
While the Stags team of senior Matthew Williams (CMC), Dave Makhervaks (HMC), junior Grant Murray (HMC), and senior Graham Spurzem (CMC) placed third in the men's 200 free relay, William's leadoff split of 20.51 was the fastest in the pool.
The finals for one diving event and six swimming events are on the docket for Friday at the Brenda Villa Aquatic Center: the 400-yard individual medley, 100-yard freestyle, 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard breaststroke, 100-yard backstroke, 400-yard medley relay and the women's 3M diving competition.
