Athenas & Stags set meet records in 800 free relay

COMMERCE, Calif. – In the first day of the SCIAC Championships, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps swimming and diving teams set new meet records and are each battling for the top spot in the conference. The Athenas, bolstered by a superb showing in the 1-meter diving, sit in first place with an 82-point lead over Pomona-Pitzer. The Sagehens hold a narrow 122-114 lead over the Stags after the first day of competition.

After dominating in the preliminary round, junior Maia Presti (SC) won the 1M diving competition with the score of 504.35. In the dual meet with Chapman in January, Presti lost to Kellyn Toole by just one point on the 1M board, but then came back in the finals yesterday to win by over 40 points. All five of the CMS divers finished in the top-8 in the finals. Senior Carli Lessard (HMC) improved from fourth in the prelims to third in the finals (459.85) and senior Mary Lynn Clark (SC) leap frogged up two places between prelims and finals to finish with a 407.50.

The swimming portion was kicked off by the 200-yard medley relay. The same women's relay teams that swam two weeks ago in the dual meet between CMS and Pomona-Pitzer went head to head again on Wednesday night, this time with the Athenas touching first. While the PP team went slightly faster than in the dual meet, the CMS swimmers of senior Kelly Ngo (CMC), freshman Claire Bacon-Brenes (SC), senior Stephanie Doi (CMC) and freshman Jocelyn Crawford (CMC) improved by over two seconds for the win at 1:43.88. The Athenas also earned top points in the consolation round with the "B" relay.

On the men's side, Pomona-Pitzer finished first at 1:31.31 in the 200 medley relay with the Stags just behind at 1:31.98. Despite touching second, CMS' team of freshman Dave Makhervaks (HMC), sophomore Aaron Lutzker (CMC), sophomore Jackson Crewe (CMC) and senior Graham Spurzem (CMC) earned a spot at No. 6 in the record books.

In the 800-yard freestyle relay, both the CMS men and women set new meet records. The Athenas, at 7:37.09, swam the second fastest time in program history with the team of junior Lauren Rosenberger (CMC), sophomore Riley Hoffman (CMC), sophomore Emma Stacy (SC), and junior Elizabeth Carrade (CMC). The Stags' team sponsored a swimmer from each year, captained by senior Matthew Williams (CMC) swimming the first leg. Freshman Ben Culberson (CMC), Junior Grant Murray (CMC) and sophomore Jackson Crewe (CMC) rounded out the squad whose time ranks at No. 3 in program history.

Thursday's finals include the 500-yard freestyle, 200-yar individual medley, 50-yard freestyle, 200-yard freestyle relay, and the men's 3-meter diving.
