Three pool records set in victory over Cal Lu and Caltech

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Three pool records were set in Saturday's double dual meet with Cal Lutheran and Caltech. Both the men's and women's teams for Claremont-Mudd-Scripps were victorious on the day beating CLU 153-68 (Stags) and 173-64 (Athenas), while taking Caltech 170-40 (Stags) and 197-30 (Athenas).

The meet started off with exceptional performances on the diving boards. The CMS women were the top five finishers in the 1-meter event, led by junior Maia Presti (SC). Her score of 318.00 is the new Axelrood record, besting her own score of 273.83 from earlier this season. On the 3-meter board, the Athenas took the top four spots, this time led by senior Carli Lessard (HMC) with a score of 288.40. On the men's side, junior Grant Murray (HMC) earned some points for the Stags with a second place finish on the 1M at 141.55.

CMS won both sides of the 200-yard medley relay as the winning Athenas went 1:48.34 and Stags followed up with 1:35.49. The women's relay team consisted of freshmen Jocelyn Crawford (CMC), Claire Bacon-Brenes (SC), and Ivy Chen (HMC) and sophomore Emma Stacy (SC). Freshmen Dave Makhervaks (HMC) and William Meng (HMC) swam bookends of the Stags' team with Murray and sophomore Jackson Crewe (HMC) racing in the second and third legs.

Crawford won two more races, one individual and then the 200-yard freestyle relay at the end of the meet. In her winning 100-yard backstroke swim at 58.02, she was 0.03 seconds off her own pool record she had set earlier in the season. Stacy, junior Elizabeth Carrade (CMC) and sophomore Riley Hoffman (CMC) joined Crawford on the winning free relay team that touched at 1:40.58.

The Stags followed up the Athenas' win in the 200 free relay with a one-second victory over Cal Lutheran. Senior Matthew Williams (CMC) paired up with Meng, Crewe and senior Graham Spurzem (CMC) to win it at 1:25.87.

In the 1650-yard freestyle race, sophomore Torrey Hart (CMC) and sophomore Aaron Lutzker (HMC) won their respective races at 18:46.42 and 16:54.72. Lutzker now owns the pool record in the 100-yard breaststroke posting a time of 57.72. Both he and sophomore Tyler Welty (CMC) at 57.90 came in under the previous Axelrood record.

The third record set in the meet went to Williams in the 200-yard freestyle at 1:41.23. This time also earned him a spot in the program's top-10 at No. 10. Williams also took the 100-yard butterfly at 51.14 to ultimately win all three events he entered.

Chen's second win of the day was in the women's 100 fly with the time of 58.70. Another double winner in the meet was senior Stephanie Doi (CMC). She took the 100-yard freestyle (53.87) and then the 100-yard breaststroke (1:06.74). The final win on the women's side went to freshman Lindsey Seidner (CMC) in the 200 individual medley (2:14.53).

Freshman Ben Culberson (CMC) swam a stellar 500-yard freestyle (4:41.63) that was just off the pool record of 4:41.06 last set in 2015. Freshman Sam Willett (CMC) took the 100 back (54.60) while classmate Henry Limm (HMC) owned the fastest time in the 200 IM (1:55.92). Spurzem's second win of the day came in the 100 free (46.85).
