Swimming takes all but one event while diving breaks pool records at Redlands
REDLANDS, Calif. – The men's and women's Claremont-Mudd-Scripps swimming and diving teams won 25 of 26 events in Saturday's dual meet with Redlands. The Athenas won by the largest margin, beating the Bulldogs 186-54 while the Stags still held over a hundred-point advantage at 178-61.
To start things off, freshman diver Kendall Hollimon (CMC) earned his first win of the day by setting a new pool record on the 3-meter board, scoring 374.65. Later in the meet, he broke the other diving pool record on the 1-meter board (341.35). Teammate Carli Lessard (HMC) set a pool record on the women's side with a score of 301.25 from the 3M. Last but not least, the Athenas additionally won the 1M diving event with junior Maia Presti (SC) in first at 280.45.
With a score of 267.05 on the 1M board, sophomore Jacque Desmond (SC) has now qualified for the zone diving meet at the end of the season in Grinnell, Iowa. She will join Hollimon, Presti and Lessard, who have already qualified.
In the swimming portion of the meet, seniors Matthew Williams (CMC), Graham Spurzem (CMC) and Stephanie Doi (CMC) along with sophomore Aaron Lutzker (HMC) led the teams with three victories each.
Williams, Spurzem and Lutzker joined up with sophomore Tyler Welty (CMC) to take the opening event, the 400-yard medley relay (3:28.20). At the tail end of the meet, Williams and Spurzem paired with freshman Dave Makhervaks (HMC) and sophomore Jackson Crewe (HMC) to win the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:12.13). The two each won an individual event as well. Williams touched first in the 200-yard backstroke (1:55.67) and Spurzem took the 50-yard freestyle at 21.94.
Lutzker added two individual medals to his relay win. He also took first place in the 200-yard butterfly (1:55.69) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:10.58). In addition to his contributions on the 400 free relay team, Crewe also won the 200-yard freestyle (1:46.46).
The final double-winner for the Stags was freshman distance swimmer Ben Culberson (CMC). Culberson won both the 1650-yard freestyle (16:29.26) and the 500-yard freestyle (4:47.48). Freshmen Henry Limm (HMC) and William Meng (HMC) added wins for CMS in the 400-yard individual medley (4:09.93) and 100-yard freestyle (48.61), respectively.
For the Athenas, Doi joined freshmen Ivy Chen (HMC), Claire Bacon-Brenes (SC) and senior Kelly Ngo (CMC) for the win in the 400 medley relay (4:02.14) to start off the meet. Doi and Chen paired again for the 400 free relay (3:43.17), this time with junior Elizabeth Carrade (CMC) and sophomore Riley Hoffman (CMC). Doi's third win came in the 50 free (25.04), beating Ngo by just one hundredth of a second while the Athenas swept the podium.
Exhibiting her versatility, freshman Liv Baker (CMC) won the 400 IM (4:44.79) and then followed it up with another first place finish in the 200 back (2:11.74). Senior Kayla Flaten (CMC) and sophomore Emma Stacy (SC) took the 100 (56.36) and 200 (1:58.40) free events, respectively. Additionally, senior Emily McKinnon (CMC) edged Bacon-Brenes by less than four seconds to win the 200 breast at 2:25.86.
In the mile swim (1650 free), the Athenas easily went 1-2-3 with Carrade leading the charge at 18:07.01. In the final distance race for the day, junior Lauren Rosenberger (CMC) won the 500 free (5:20.72).
The Stags and Athenas each sit at 5-0 in SCIAC competition having beaten Occidental, Whittier, La Verne, Chapman, and now Redlands. The next double-dual meet with Cal Lutheran and Caltech is slated for Saturday, Jan. 28, back at Axelrood Pool.
