Swim & dive sweeps 19 events vs. Chapman
CLAREMONT, Calif. – After a tight loss on the previous day, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps swim and dive team bounced back to sweep the podium in 19 of 32 events in the SCIAC dual meet with Chapman. The men won with the score of 228-46 while the women's team more than doubled Chapman's points as well, winning 208-89.
Freshman diver Kendall Hollimon (CMC) earned big points on the boards scoring 386.60 on the 3-meter and 337.20 on the 1-meter to start off the meet. On the women's side, senior Carli Lessard (HMC) and junior Maia Presti (SC) finished just behind last year's SCIAC champ, Kellyn Toole on the 1M and 3M boards, respectively.
As the clouds dispersed and the sun shone through, CMS began the swimming portion by sweeping both the men's and women's 200-yard medley relay. This was the first of four eventual wins for senior Matthew Williams (CMC) and three for each of seniors Kelly Ngo (CMC) and Stephanie Doi (CMC) and sophomore Naomi Ngo (CMC).
As the favorite in the 100-yard backstroke and 100-yard butterfly, Williams delivered in both events, swimming 51.26 in the backstroke and 51.83 for the fly. He capped off the day swimming the fastest split (21.56) for the Stags' "A" team in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:28.11).
Sophomore Jackson Crewe (HMC) joined Williams on the winning 200 medley relay team and then added two individual event wins: the 200-yard freestyle (1:45.60) and 200-yard backstroke (1:57.76). Also on that initial relay team was sophomore Tyler Welty (CMC) who led the charge in the 200-yard breaststroke, winning it with the time of 2:12.76.
The Stag who took home the most first place finishes in individual events was already-decorated freshman Henry Limm (HMC). He came up with the gold in the 100-yard breaststroke (59.83), the 500-yard freestyle (4:46.17) and the 200-yard individual medley (1:59.28).
Two final Stag freestyle swimmers were multiple event winners as well: sophomore Trevor Fung (HMC) and freshman Dave Makhervaks (HMC). Fung won his first college individual event by taking the 50-yard freestyle (22.58) and then joined Makhervaks, Williams and sophomore John Jeang (HMC) in the winning 200-yard free relay (1:28.11). Makhervaks was also the winner in the 100 free (48.64).
For the Athenas, Doi and Naomi Ngo each added two individual event wins. Doi touched first in the 100 free at 54.41, just .24 seconds faster than teammate sophomore Emma Stacy (SC). And then, as the favorite, she won the 200 IM by almost two seconds. Naomi Ngo dominated in the butterfly winning both the 100- and 200-yard events at 2:12.54 and 1:00.33.
Kelly Ngo took first in the 100 back (1:00.21) and then was on the winning "A" team for the 200 free relay (1:41.86). As the second leg on that relay team, junior Elizabeth Carrade (CMC) also finished the day as a triple-winner. She was the first place finisher in two other freestyle events, winning the 200 free (1:59.63) and 500 free (5:15.21).
While not a multiple-winner, freshman Claire Bacon-Brenes (SC) swam a blazing 1:06.22 in the 100 breast which was just .23 seconds off the pool record set in 2010.
The Stags and Athenas return to the pool on Jan. 14 for another SCIAC dual meet, this time at Redlands. The day before, the divers travels to UCLA for a diving invitational, beginning at 10 a.m. and Jan. 13.
