Tight meet with Cal Baptist lost by just nine points on men’s side

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's swim and dive team ended up just nine points behind Cal Baptist in the annual dual meet with the Lancers, losing 125-116. In the one-of-a-kind meet, just fractions of seconds separated the teams in a few races to make for an exciting competition.

The Stags had bookend first place finishes, starting with the 500-yard medley relay (4:38.36). The race was swam by senior Matthew Williams (CMC), sophomore Aaron Lutzker (HMC), sophomore Jackson Crewe (HMC), and senior Graham Spurzem (CMC). In the last race of the day CMS went 1-2-3 in the 500-yard freestyle relay, with the team of sophomore John Jeang (HMC), freshman Dave Makhervaks (HMC), Crewe, and Ben Culberson (CMC) winning the event (4:11.18).

Williams tacked on two more top-finishes in the meet taking the 50-yard freestyle (21.47) and the 300-yard backstroke (3:03.69). CMS swept the podium in the 300 back as well; less than three seconds separated the top three Stags.

Lutzker was joined by sophomore John Everett (CMC) and freshman Henry Limm (HMC) in the 300-yard butterfly as only two seconds were the difference between the first (3:01.61, Lutzker) and fourth (3:03.56, CBU's Quinn Birtles) place in the long race.

Freshman Kendall Hollimon (CMC) netted crucial points for the Stags by winning the 3-meter diving competition with a score of 351.55.

Arguably two of the most exciting events of the day involved a Harvey Mudd freshman, Limm. In the 300-yard individual medley, Limm (3:00.78) touched the wall .35 seconds after CBU's Brandon Schuster for a second place finish. Seven events later, Limm (3:16.33) was a mere nine hundredths of a second behind Eric Tolman from the Lancers in the 300-yard breaststroke.

Ultimately, just nine points separated the extremely evenly matched teams in the meet.

CMS resumes SCIAC competition tomorrow, Saturday, Jan. 7, hosting a dual meet against Chapman with the diving beginning at 10 a.m.
