Freshmen steal show in Axelrood Pool debut

CLAREMONT, Calif. – History was made on Friday evening as three Claremont-Mudd-Scripps swimmers posted record times at Axelrood Pool and 10 freshmen took first in their home debut. Freshman Henry Limm (HMC) broke the pool record in the 400 individual medley, taking first place in the heat with a time of 4:06.55. Sophomore Aaron Lutzker (HMC) also had a strong race, taking first place in the 100 breaststroke with a record-setting time of 57.98. For the Athenas, freshman Jocelyn Crawford (CMC) had a fantastic home debut, breaking the 100 backstroke pool record at 57.99.

CMS hosted Occidental College in their first official meet of the season, and won the competition quite handily. The Stags won their competition by a lopsided score of 193 – 38 while the Athenas controlled their heats 198-37.

Freshman Kendall Hollimon was impressive on the board, recording high marks in the 1 meter and 3 meter dive events. Hollimon looked electric off the bounce, executing tough spins and making clean dives to take first in both events with the score of 369.00 in the 1m and 349.50 in the 3m.

Senior Matthew Williams (CMC) continued where he left off last season, winning the 100 backstroke event at 50.58, more than two seconds ahead than the second-place freshman Dave Makhervaks (HMC) who clocked in at 52.72. Freshman Jacob Bain (CMC) lead the 100 freestyle by a full body-length, taking first at a time of 47.88, and his classmate Alex Moody (HMC) won the 1000 freestyle at 10:08.10. Another freshman, Ben Culberson (CMC), easily controlled the 500 freestyle, as he was a lap ahead of his classmate Limm, finishing at 4:44.22.

Several freshman Athenas had statement victories in their heat, giving the already strong swim program plenty of optimism heading into the future. Shannon Steele(CMC) won the 1000 freestyle quite easily at 10:53.15, pulling more than two laps ahead of Occidental's Rose Seabrook (11:41.25). Ivy Chen (CMC) sped through the 400 IM at 4:36.79 and her classmate Alanna DeMuro (CMC) took the 100 butterfly by a hand at 1:00.58. Claire Bacon-Brenes (SC) had an outstanding freshman debut, taking the 100 breaststroke by a finger at 1:07.66.

Senior Stephanie Doi (CMC) showed why she was one of the highly regarded swimmers in the conference, winning the 100 freestyle at 53.76 and junior Elizabeth Carrade (CMC) had no trouble dominating the 500 freestyle at 5:19.22.
