Tough competition from UCSD preps swim & dive for season

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – In the first swimming and diving meet of the year, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps team faced UC San Diego for some stiff competition from the NCAA Division II opponent. Junior Victor Ginelli (CMC) was the lone event winner while CMS finished in the top-3 fastest times in 14 other events.

Ginelli's score of 248.95 on the 1-meter board topped Trevor Jackson (237.27 points). Then, UCSD's Jackson edged out junior Patrick Quarberg (CMC) on the 3-meter board by less than 10 points.

In discussing the competition, head coach Charlie Griffiths said, "We knew UCSD would be a tough opponent. We scheduled them for that reason and we got a lot out of the experience. We posted some fast early-season times, including a few events where we set marks that rank among the best we've seen during first-semester competition."

On the women's side, the 2016 SCIAC Athlete of the Year, Stephanie Doi (CMC), was top-3 in two relays and one individual event. The 200-yard medley relay of freshmen Jocelyn Crawford (CMC) and Claire Bacon-Brenes (SC) with seniors Doi and Kelly Ngo (CMC) touched at 1:48.83 for a second place finish in the first event of the meet. Doi also swam the third fastest time in the 100-yard freestyle and joined with Ngo, Crawford and sophomore Emma Stacy (SC) for the second fastest in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Also placing in individual events were Ngo and Bacon-Brenes. Ngo, the CMS record holder and 2016 NCAA qualifier in the 50-yard freestyle, was two tenths of a second off a first place finish on Saturday with 24.58. In her first collegiate meet, Bacon-Brenes also swam the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:07.04, just 22 hundredths off the CMS top-10.

Freshmen Dave Makhervaks (HMC) and Henry Limm (HMC) earned places in the program's top-10 from performances on Saturday. Makhervaks placed second in the 100-yard backstroke at 51.35 for No. 4 on the CMS list. Limm sits two spots higher than teammate Tyler Welty (CMC) at No. 6 with a second place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke at 2:05.54. Sophomore Aaron Lutzker (HMC) and Limm went second and third in the 200-yard butterfly and then, in his final event of the day, Lutzker had the second fastest time in the 200-yard individual medley. Welty himself had a strong performance in the 100-yard breaststroke, good for second place.

Other individual top-3 finishes include freshman Jacob Bain (CMC) in the 50 free, senior Graham Spurzem (CMC) in the 100 free and freshman Sam Willett (CMC) in the 200-yard backstroke. In the final event of the day, the CMS "A" group for the 400 free relay posted a 3:09.48, just barely faster than the 3:09.67 from last year's swim from the same meet with Matthew Williams (CMC), Joseph Hinton (CMC'16), Alex Poltash (CMC'16), and John Jeang (HMC). That team was comprised of Makhervaks, Bain, freshman William Meng (HMC), and Spurzem.

Looking forward, CMS hosts their annual Alumni Meet on Saturday, Nov. 5 and then begins SCIAC competition on Nov. 11 with Occidental.
