Relays move Stags up a spot to ninth midway through NCAAs

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Behind the performances of its relay teams (200 free and 400 medley), the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's swimming team moved up one spot and now sits in ninth place (67.50) after the first two days of the NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships at the Greensboro Aquatics Center. The Stags are in search of the program's fourth-straight top-10 finish at nationals.

The evening finals session began with the 200 free relay and the Stags did not disappoint as they touched the wall in fifth for the first All-America, top-8 swim of the Championships for CMS. Senior Alex Poltash (CMC), junior Matthew Williams (CMC), senior Joseph Hinton (CMC) and sophomore Noah Deer (CMC) combined for a time of 1:21.37. Deer's 50 free anchor time (20.18) is a PR and he moves up to fourth all-time at CMS.

Day 2 closed for the Stags with a 13th place finish (fifth in the consolation finals) in the 400-yard medley relay. Williams, senior Zach Alleva (CMC), senior Matthew Valentine (HMC) and Deer swam the race in 3:19.27. Deer's 100 free anchor split in the prelims was also a PR (44.59).

In the men's 100 butterfly, Williams swam in the consolation finals and finished in seventh for an overall national finish of 15th in the event.

For the Athenas, junior Kelly Ngo (CMC) swam in the 200 free morning preliminaries and had a time of 1:55.03, but she did not qualify for the evening swims.

Time trials start each day at 10 a.m. and the finals are scheduled for 6 p.m. EST. Live video and live scoring is available throughout the week at the NCAA Championships. A schedule of events and other meet information can be found in the Championships Program.
