CMS teams sit in second after Day 2 of SCIAC Championships

LA MIRADA, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's and men's swimming & diving teams are both in second place after Day 2 of the SCIAC Championships, Feb. 19, at Splash! La Mirada Regional Aquatics Center. The Athenas (362) were the big movers of the day as they jumped from fifth to second place, 12 points behind first place Pomona-Pitzer (374). The Stags (327) remained in second place, but Pomona-Pitzer (393) stretched out its advantage in the meet.

CMS had three SCIAC championship swims on the day (two for the Stags and one for the Athenas) and 10 podium finishes (six for the Athenas and four for the Stags).

Senior Alex Poltash (CMC) won the men's 50 free (20.51) for CMS in an event that he holds the SCIAC record in already (set in 2015). Later on in the men's 200 free relay, the CMS 'A' team of Poltash, junior Matthew Williams (CMC), senior Joseph Hinton (CMC) and sophomore Noah Deer (CMC) took home the SCIAC championship as they combined to swim the event in 1:21.61.

For the Athenas, junior Stephanie Doi (CMC) swam her way to a conference championship in the 200 IM (2:05.41). An Athena record also fell during the meet as junior Kelly Ngo (CMC) in the 50 free (23.49), improved on her previous team record by 1/100th of a second.

Other podium finishes on the day for the Stags went to senior Matthew Valentine (HMC – 200 IM: 2nd) and Deer (50 free). Sophomore Lizzie Carrade (CMC – 500 free: 3rd), junior Emily McKinnon (CMC – 200 IM: 3rd), junior Courtney Chan (CMC – 50 free: 3rd), junior Carli Lessard (HMC – 1M Dive: 2nd) and the 200 free relay 'A' team all had top-3 finishes for the Athenas.

Day 3 preliminaries start at 9 a.m. and finals begin at 4 p.m. with the men's 1-meter diving event.
