CMS keeps momentum going against Caltech and Whittier

WHITTIER, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athenas and Stags swept SCIAC opponents Caltech and Whittier on Saturday, Jan. 16. The double dual meet was held at Whittier. The Athenas defeated Caltech 226-47 and Whittier 215-68, while the Stags came out on top, 224-70 over Caltech and 200-85 over Whittier. Both CMS squads are 6-0 in SCIAC competition.

Divers Carli Lessard and Patrick Quarberg opened the meet by each winning the 1-meter and 3-meter springboard events.

Stephanie Doi and Riley Hoffman posted a pair of wins for the Athenas. Doi took first in the 100 yard butterfly and 100 yard breaststroke events, with Hoffman topping the podium in the 200 backstroke and 200 IM. The Athenas also earned individual victories by Anastasia Ibrahim (100 back), Courtney Chan (50 freestyle), Kayla Flaten (200 breaststroke) and Lizzie Carrade (500 freestyle).

The Stags were led by double-winners Matthew Williams and Jackson Crewe. Williams won the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly, with Crewe besting the field in the 200 backstroke and 200 IM. Six additional Stags won individual events: Jacob Eynon (1000 freestyle), Matthew Valentine (100 backstroke), Zachary Goland(200 butterfly), Joseph Hinton (100 freestyle), Austin Melody (200 breaststroke) and Aaron Lutzker (500 freestyle).

CMS won three of the four relay events contested.

"I like the direction that we're heading," head coach Charlie Griffiths said after the meet. "The team put together a tremendous training camp, with excellent workouts and several meaningful team events. We're excited to start second semester classes and keep preparing for the Championship season."

One day earlier, the CMS divers participated in the UCLA Diving Invitational. In a field loaded with NCAA Division I divers, Patrick Quarberg and Victor Ginelli placed 12th and 15th on the men's 3-meter board. Carli Lessard and Nia Cooper finished 36th and 45th, respectively, in the women's 1-meter competition.  

Both swim and dive squads will return to SCIAC competition on Jan. 30. CMS will host the University of La Verne on Senior Day, with diving to begin at 10:00 a.m. and swimming at 11:00.
