Pool records fall during win at Redlands

The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps swimming and diving teams remain undefeated in SCIAC play, after a pair of convincing wins at Redlands on Saturday. The Athenas beat UR 167 to 76, with the Stags topping the Bulldogs 172.5 to 67.5. Both CMS teams are 7-0 in SCIAC, with a showdown against 7-0 Pomona-Pitzer scheduled for Saturday, February 7.

CMS set four pool records at Redlands. The Athena 400-yard medley relay of Kelly Ngo (CMC), Stephanie Doi (CMC), Lorea Gwo (CMC) and LillyBelle Deer (CMC) broke the four-minute barrier, clocking in at 3:59.71, topping the previous record held by CMS' 2011 crew of Tessa Dover (CMC '11), Emma Jones (CMC '12), Annika Jessen (CMC '14) and Helen Liu (CMC '14). Sophomore Matthew Williams (CMC) broke the 200-yard backstroke pool record, posting a season-best time of 1:52.32. Senior diver James Stevick (CMC) continued his record-board onslaught by obliterating both the 1-meter and 3-meter board pool records. Stevick's 3-meter score of 375.20 bested the old record by 20 points, while his 1-meter mark of 384.45 was over 50 points better than the previous standard.

The Athenas spread the wealth around with nine different student-athletes winning individual events: Louisa Dunwiddie (CMC, 1650-yard freestyle), Natalie Green (CMC, 200-yard freestyle), Ngo (50-yard freestyle), Maia Presti (SCR, 1-m diving), Doi (200-yard butterfly), Courtney Chan (CMC, 100-yard freestyle), Deer (500-yard freestyle), Emily McKinnon (CMC, 200-yard breaststroke), Carli Lessard (HMC, 3-m diving). CMS also won the 200-yard freestyle relay with Doi, Chan and Gwo teaming with senior Maddie Crawford (CMC) to touch first.

The Stags also earned individual event victories from Brace Young (CMC, 200-yard freestyle), Alex Poltash (CMC, 100-yard freestyle), Cameron Whiting (CMC, 500 freestyle) and Tim Storer (200 breast). Williams and Poltash tied for first in the 50 free with matching 21.87 second times. CMS took both relay events, as well. Graham Spurzem (CMC), Zach Alleva (CMC), Patrick Shultz (CMC) and Whiting won the 400 medley relay. Spurzem, Shultz, Poltash and Joseph Hinton combined to conclude the meet by winning the 200-yard freestyle relay.

CMS' final dual meet will be Saturday, Feb. 7 at Axelrood Pool versus the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens. Diving begins at 10 a.m. with Senior Recognition and then swimming competition slated for 11 a.m.
