CMS surges past La Verne

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Stags and Athenas each moved to 4-0 in SCIAC competition with emphatic victories over the University of La Verne on Saturday. The Athenas won 210 to 61, with the Stags topping the Leos 208 to 54.

Thirty one events were contested on the day and CMS won 28 of them. Two Athenas won multiple individual events, with Courtney Chan (CMC) winning the 100-yard backstroke and 100-yard freestyle events. Fellow sophomore, Kelly Ngo (CMC) won the 50-yard freestyle and 200-yard breaststroke. Three Stags emerged as double event winners. James Stevick (CMC) won both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving competitions, while Matthew Williams (CMC) won the 200-yard free and 200-yard back. Graham Spurzem (CMC) earned first in the 50-yard free and 100-yard butterfly.

Seven additional Athenas topped individual event standings: Molly Loftus (CMC, 1650-yard free), Stephanie Doi (200-yard fly), Renee Lundgren (500-yard free), LillyBelle Deer (CMC, 100 fly), Louisa Dunwiddie (CMC, 400-yard individual medley), Maia Presti (SRC, 1-meter diving), Carli Lessard (HMC, 3-m diving).

Likewise, seven additional Stags won events: Cory Johnson (HMC, 100 back), Timothy Storer (CMC, 100-yard breaststroke), Matthew Valentine (HMC, 200 fly), Alex Poltash (CMC, 100 free), Jonah Breslow (CMC, 200 breast), Devin Nishizaki (CMC, 500-yard freestyle), Alex Mendoza (400 IM).

CMS also swept all four relay events.

The meet marks the conclusion of CMS' annual "Training Camp," with second semester classes beginning next week. CMS will be back in action on Saturday, January 24 in a SCIAC double-dual meet with Whittier and Cal Tech at Pasadena City College.
