Distance swimmers shine in Commerce

COMMERCE, Calif. – With exam week on the horizon, a small number of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps swimmers attended the Collegiate Winter Invitational at the Brenda Villa Aquatic Center in Commerce, Dec. 12-14.

In Friday's timed-final events, senior Alex Mendoza (CMC) and freshman Brace Young (CMC) earned first and second place finishes in the 1650-yard freestyle. Mendoza's winning time of 16:17.31 is the SCIAC's leading mark and less than one second away from an NCAA B-cut. Sophomore Renee Lundgren (CMC) impressed in the women's 1650, earning third place with a personal best time. Lundgren's mark of 17:45.30 ranks eighth on the CMS all-time list.

Senior Timothy Storer (CMC) placed third in the 400-yard individual medley and then anchored the Stag 800-yard freestyle relay, which dropped a narrow race for first with Concordia University (Irvine). CMS' time of 7:01.92 was .15 seconds behind Concordia. Senior Cameron Whiting (CMC) led off the relay in a season-best time of 1:41.34.

Saturday's events were highlighted by senior Marc Blumberg's (CMC) fifth place finish in the 100-yard butterfly. Blumberg also placed 11th in the 50-yard freestyle. Senior LillyBelle Deer (CMC) was 10th in the 100 fly, Maddie Crawford (CMC) 12th in the 200-yard freestyle. Crawford and Deer were 15th and 19th, respectively in the 50 free.

Mendoza returned on Sunday, placing third in the 500-yard freestyle.

CMS will next compete at California Baptist University on Friday, Jan. 9. Swimming and diving will both begin at 2 p.m.
