200 Relay team and diver Stevick have Stags in 8th after first day of NCAA Championships

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's swimming & diving team registered 39 points to put them in eighth place after the first day of competition at the NCAA Championship on March 19 at the IU Natatorium. Less than 10 points separate CMS from the top five, as MIT currently sits in fifth with 47 points. In 2013, CMS was in 12th with 22 points after the first day so the team is ahead of last year's pace in both categories.

On the 3-meter boards, junior James Stevick placed in sixth place with a championship final score of 493.65, after a preliminary score of 468.25. The 200-yard medley relay team of freshman Matthew Williams, sophomore Zach Alleva, junior Patrick Shultz and sophomore Joseph Hinton followed Stevick's performance with a sixth place finish of their own with a time of 1:30.10, slightly better than their preliminary time of 1:30.69.

In preliminary action, junior Cameron Whiting (4:35.57), junior Marc Blumberg (4:35.85) and sophomore Conrad Shabb (4:35.96) finished in 24th, 26th and 27th, respectively, in the 500-yard freestyle.

Later in the competition in the 50-yard freestyle preliminaries, sophomore Alex Poltash led CMS with a 19th place finish with a time of 20.65 as he just missed out in a spot in the consolation finals.
