Williams named SCIAC Athlete of the Week

PASADENA, Calif. – The Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) named Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's swimmer Matthew Williams as the SCIAC Male Athlete of the Week for the week of Feb. 17-23.

Williams won two individual events and was on three winning relays to lead the Stags to their seventh straight SCIAC Championship. He set SCIAC records while winning the 100 (47.94) and 200 (1:45.67) backstrokes. He led off the winning 200 (1:30.71) and 400 (3:18.30) medley relays and swam the second leg of the winning 400 free relay. He also swam the second leg of the 200 free relay that set the #2 time in CMS history (1:21.83) in a time trial and finished third in the 50 free (20.85). His backstroke times were the only NCAA A cuts in the meet and are the fastest times in the nation. His 50 time and all four relay times were B cuts. The medley relay times set meet records with the 200 medley equaling the SCIAC record. Williams was named Freshman of the Year following the meet.
