Stags win seventh straight SCIAC Championship

Commerce, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's swimming & diving team won their seventh straight SCIAC title Sunday night after a dominating performance over the four-day 2014 SCIAC Swimming & Diving Championships.  The Stags totaled 1,229 points and captured 14 titles in individual and relay events. Pomona-Pitzer (706.5) and Redlands (622) finished second and third overall.

Conrad Shabb began the final night of competition with a CMS and SCIAC record of 15:49.94 in the 1650 freestyle.  Alex Mendoza finished second in 15:54.19.  Both times were NCAA 'B' cuts.

Matt Williams destroyed the CMS and SCIAC records in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:45.67, which is an NCAA'A' cut.  The Stags went 1-2-3-4 in the 100 freestyle with Alex Poltash, Patrick Shultz, Joey Hinton and Cameron Whiting.  Poltash's winning time of 45.09 was a 'B' cut.

Anthony Ribal was third in the 200 breaststroke in 2:04.58 while in the 200 butterfly Marc Blumberg was second in 1:50.99 with both times 'B' cuts.  The Stags capped off their championship performance with a win in the 400 free relay.  The team of Hinton, Williams, Shultz and Poltash won by over two seconds with a time of 3:01.64, also a 'B' cut.

At the conclusion of the meet, James Stevick was named SCIAC Athlete of the Year while Williams was named SCIAC Freshman of the Year.  Stevick set SCIAC records while winning both the 1 and 3 meter diving competitions.  Williams set SCIAC records in both the 100 and 200 backstrokes with 'A' cuts in both events.  He was on the winning 200 medley, 400 medley and 400 free relays and also finished third in the 50 free.
