Stags Capture Sixth Straight SCIAC Championship

LA MIRADA, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's swimming & diving team closed out an impressive three-day stretch at the 2013 SCIAC Swimming & Diving Championships by setting several school and meet records en route to their sixth straight SCIAC title.

Over the three days in La Mirada, the Stags totaled 1,170 points and captured 16 titles in individual and relay events. Redlands (713) and Pomona-Pitzer rounded out the top three finishers.

The final day began with the1650-yard freestyle and both sophomore Alex Mendoza and freshman Conrad Shabb each broke the 25-year school record in the event, while Mendoza earned the individual title with a time of 15:53.75. Both swimmers also had NCAA 'B' qualifying times in the event. Senior Blake Weber followed with a SCIAC Championships record time of 1:49.38 in the 200-yard backstroke to win the individual title.

In the 100-yard freestyle, freshman Joseph Hinton won the event for CMS with a time of 45:32, also a 'B' cut and the second fastest time in CMS program history. The Stags wrapped up the final day by breaking a 30-year old school record in the 400-yard freestyle relay by nearly two seconds. The relay team of freshman Alex Poltash, senior Devin Bowers, Hinton and Weber won the 400 free relay with a time of 3:01.27 and also set a meet record.

Weber for his efforts at the SCIAC Championships was named the SCIAC Male Swimmer of the Year. He was the SCIAC Champion in the 200-yard individual medley, 100-yard backstroke, 200-yard backstroke and he led off the winning 200-yard medley relay, 400-yard medley relay and 800-yard free relay teams in CMS record times. He also recorded an NCAA 'A' qualifying time in the 200-yard individual medley at 1:50.16 and set meet records in the 200-yard backstroke (1:49.38) and 100-yard backstroke (50.59).
