CMS Returns to Action With Sweep Over La Verne

The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps swimming & diving team won 26 of 32 events to sweep the University of LaVerne in SCIAC dual meet action on Saturday, January 5, in its first meet in over a month.  The Athenas won 214 to 44 and the Stags topped the Leopards 191 to 85.  Both CMS squads are now 3-0 in conference play.

Senior diver, Carmen Lundell, was a double winner for the Athenas.  Lundell posted an NCAA qualifying score of 269.95 on the 3-meter board and also won the 1-meter competition.  Fellow senior, Olivia Graham won the 200 yard freestyle and the 400 Individual Medley.

Sophomore Alex Mendoza won two individual events for the Stags, taking the 200 and 500 yard freestyle events.  Classmate Marc Blumberg out-touched the field in both the 100 and 200 yard butterfly races.

Eight additional Athenas and five Stags won individual events on the day: Sean Smith (1000 FS), Hannah Bower (100 BR), Erin MacLean (200 FL), Michele Kee (50 FS), Joe Hinton (50 FS), Ali Fisher (100 FS), Alex Poltash (100 FS), Elsa Cheng (200 BK), Cory Johnson (200 BK), Maddy Gebhard (200 BR), Rachelle Holmgren (500 FS), Annika Jessen (100 FL), Conrad Shabb (400 IM).

To bookend the day, CMS scored first and second place finishes in all four relay events.

The Stags and Athenas will face California Baptist University on Friday, January 11 at CMC's Axelrood Pool. The annual "Training Camp Splash" distance meet will feature a unique format, including 300 yard stroke events. Competition will begin at 2:30 p.m.
