CMS Breaks Four Pool Records In Victories Over Pomona-Pitzer
The CMS Stags and Athenas combined for four pool records in a pair of victories over Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday. All told, CMS won 29 of the 32 events, posting a 220-73 win in the women's meet and a 229-67 tally in the men's meet.
The diving portion of the contest was held on Thursday evening. Freshman James Stevick won both boards for the Stags, notching an NCAA qualifying score of 294.65 on the 1-meter board. Athena frosh Lizzy Ginelli took first in the 1-meter and 3-meter contests.
The swimming competition opened with a bang for CMS, as the first two races led to pool record times. The Athena 200 yard medley relay of Elsa Cheng, Emma Jones, Katie Bilotti, and Michele Kee clocked in at 1:49.47, a slim .02 quicker than the record previously set by Cheng, Annie Perizzolo, Bilotti, and Jones in December 2009. The Stags built on the momentum, as Austin Hallett, Vincent Pai, Patrick Shultz and Devin Bowers' time of 1:37.50 was .28 quicker than Cal Baptist's record from 2004.
Vincent Pai topped his own Axelrood Pool record by .15, with a 58.61 in the 100 yard breaststroke. Michele Kee later posted a pool record in the 200 yard butterfly by .8 seconds, finishing in 2:07.06. Kee's 200 fly time ranks as the second fastest in Athena history. Continuing their dominance in their respective disciplines, Pai also won the 200 breast and Kee won the 100 fly.
In addition to Pai and Kee, CMS had four additional multi-event winners. Freshman LillyBelle Deer won the distance double of the 1650 and 500 yard freestyle events. Stag frosh Patrick Shultz won the sprint double of the 50 free and 100 free. Sophomore Helen Liu took the women's 100 backstroke and 50 freestyle events. Junior Jordan Lieberman, fresh off a study-abroad stint in Australia, returned in mid-season form to take the 200 butterfly and 200 backstroke events.
Other event winners were: Alex Mendoza 1650 FS, Cameron Whiting 200 FS, Emma Jones 100 BR, Erin MacLean 200 BK, Mackenzie Marrs 200 BR, Devin Nishizaki 500 FS, Marc Blumberg 100 FL, Olivia Graham 400 IM, and Tim Storer 400 IM
To end the meet, CMS nearly picked up some more pool records, finishing just off the marks, but still placing first in the 200 freestyle relays. Kee, Liu and Jones teamed with Kristie Howard to finish the 8 lengths in 1:39.38 for the Athenas. The Stags quartet of Whiting, Bowers, Jeff McNerney and Shultz finished in 1:27.15, with Shultz anchoring in a blistering 20.83 split.
Both Stags and Athenas are 2-0 in SCIAC competition and will resume SCIAC competition after exam week and the holiday break.
