Stags Take On UCSD

The CMS Stags opened their 2010-11 campaign with a dual meet at UC-San Diego on Saturday, October 30.  The Stags fell to the D-II power Tritons by a score of 204 to 91, but posted several strong early season performances.

CMS was led by sophomore Jordan Lieberman, who notched the top time in the 100 butterfly, clocking at 53.12.  Lieberman later came in third in the 200 fly with an in-season best of 2:00.48.

Sophomore Drake Escrofani placed third in 1-meter diving and teammate Andrew Fevery took third on the 3-meter board.

Junior Vincent Pai broke the 1:00 barrier in the 100 yard breaststroke (59.85) and later swam to a 2:12.57 in the 200 breast, which ranks him among the best in NCAA D-III in this early phase of the season

Top individual finishers for CMS were Brant Kersten (1000 freestyle), Jeff McNerney (200 freestyle and 100 free), Nick Ostreim (100 backstroke and 200 back), Devin Bowers (50 free), Sean Smith (500 free) and Pai (200 IM).

Relay leaders included the 200 yard medley relay of Blake Weber, Brad Perfect, Lieberman and Bowers and the 400 free relay of Ian McGinnity, McNerney, Smith and Bowers.

"The Stags had some nice swims today. You could see that our sophomores, especially, have learned a lot about college swimming over the past year," said Head Coach Charlie Griffiths.  "Staying focused and aggressive in practice over the next month will be important for us as we get ready for the SCIAC season."

The CMS swimmers will next be competing at the Redlands Pentathlon, while the divers gear up for the Redlands Diving Invite.
