Big Second Half Helps CMS Men's Soccer Push Unbeaten Streak to Ten Games

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - William Barton, Harper Rubin and Jake Allmon scored second-half goals to turn a 0-0 halftime tie into a 3-0 lead and the No. 11 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's soccer team went on to capture a 3-1 road win over Cal Lutheran on Saturday night at William Roland Stadium.

The win extended the unbeaten streak for the Stags to 10 games (9-0-1) as they improve to 9-1-2 overall this season and 7-0-1 in the SCIAC. Cal Lutheran, which came into the contest nipping at the CMS heels at the top of the SCIAC standings, slips to 6-3-2 overall and 4-2-1 in the league. 

The score was deadlocked 0-0 at the half, although Cal Lutheran didn't manage a single shot on goal in the first 45 minutes, while the Stags forced three saves out of goalkeeper Ivan Lumbrano. The scoreless draw didn't last long after halftime, though, as Barton scored his second goal of the season off a pass from Liam O'Reilly just 7:58 into the second stanza. 

CMS picked up its second goal of the game when Rubin converted his team-leading sixth of the season with 21:26 to play, making it a 2-0 contest. Just 90 seconds later, Eduardo DeAnda came up with a huge save in goal for CMS, stopping a penalty kick to keep it a two-goal lead. That lead would then stretch to 3-0 with 13:27 to go, as Allmon scored his first of the season off a feed from Ben Pelz. 

Cal Lutheran struck back 29 seconds later to make it a 3-1 game with 12:58 to play, forcing CMS to re-focus to finish the game off. Eduardo DeAnda did have to make a save in the 89th minute to keep it 3-1, his sixth save of the second half, but the Stag lead wasn't seriously threatened. DeAnda earned the win in goal to improve to 8-0-1 this season and 17-1-2 in his career. 

CMS will have a week off before returning to action next Saturday when it travels to Whittier for a 1 p.m. contest.
