CLAREMONT, Calif. - Former Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's soccer head coach Dan Calichman will return back to Southern California as an assistant coach with the LA Galaxy of Major League Soccer, the organization announced this week.

Calichman joined Head Coach Greg Vanney in moving to the LA Galaxy from Toronto FC, where the duo coached together for seven years. Calichman left the head coaching position at CMS in 2014 to first team up with Vanney in Toronto after 13 seasons which saw him compile a 140-82-20 record and guide the Stags to four straight SCIAC Tournament titles and NCAA bids from 2009-12. 

During his playing days, Calichman served as a team captain for the LA Galaxy, where he and Vanney were teammates, during the first three years of the franchise from 1996-98, before later playing with the New England Revolution and San Jose Earthquakes. After retiring as a player, he began his coaching career with CMS in 2002, earning a 14-5-1 record and a 12-2 mark in the SCIAC in his first season at the helm. 

One of the players he recruited for the Stags was current Head Coach Ryan Fahey, who played goalie from 2006-09 and helped CMS to the first of its four straight SCIAC Tournament titles as a senior before graduating from Claremont McKenna in 2010. Calichman also tacked on a regular season SCIAC league title to his four tournament titles in 2013, his final full season with the program before being hired away by Vanney. 

"I am so thrilled to represent the club again," Calichman said in an interview with the Galaxy. "Maybe my greatest achievement as a soccer player was wearing the (captain's) arm band. Now I can do what I love for the club that I love." 

Calichman was a long history with both NCAA Division III soccer and the MLS, earning All-America honors at Williams College three times prior to starting his professional career, and then coaching CMS for 13 years and Toronto FC for seven.
