Adam Singer, SCIAC Player of the Year

Adam Singer Named SCIAC Men's Soccer Athlete of the Year, Seven Stags Earn All-SCIAC

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Senior center back Adam Singer was named the SCIAC Men's Soccer Athlete of the Year in a vote of the conference's coaches, the league office announced today on the opening day of the SCIAC Tournament.

Joining Singer on the All-SCIAC first team were junior defender William Birchard, sophomore midfielder Samay Rahim and sophomore forward William Barton. Senior forward Cole Smith, sophomore goalie Eduardo De Anda and sophomore forward Ethan Tyng were each chosen to the second team.

Singer earned a rare honor for a defensive player by taking home the league's Athlete of the Year honor. After missing his sophomore season with an injury, during which the Stags finished 4-11-1, Singer has returned to lead CMS to a combined 27-5-3 record and back-to-back SCIAC regular season championships over the last two seasons.

Since returning, Singer has anchored a defense which has allowed only 15 goals over the 35 games since the start of 2018, leading the nation in team defense a year ago (0.22) and leading the SCIAC again this fall (0.61). He has also had an impact coming forward, as he scored twice this year in conference games, including the game-winner at Occidental in the 82nd minute, which CMS meets again at home this evening in the SCIAC Semifinals.

Birchard made his second straight appearance on the All-SCIAC first team despite being hampered by an injury which kept him out of action for four games. He played both his familiar left back position and in the central midfield at different times, and finished with two goals and four assists, giving him 11 assists in the last two seasons.

Rahim made his first appearance on the All-SCIAC teams after starting all 17 games for CMS as a defensive midfielder. He contributed two assists offensively, and helped fill the role left behind by graduated senior Aidan Johnson, who was all SCIAC a year ago playing in front of the CMS back four.

Barton was the team's leading scorer this fall, ending with seven goals and two assists. He had one of the highlight goals of the season when he tallied the game-winner in overtime in a 2-1 victory at Whittier in a battle of teams which came in tied for first in the SCIAC standings, which gave the Stags the regular season title.

Smith finished the regular season with three goals and a team-high five assists, including the game-winning golden goal against St. Thomas. Tyng had six goals and two assists and was twice named the SCIAC Offensive Player of the Week after two-goal games this season. De Anda is still undefeated in his collegiate career at goalie, standing at 7-0-1 for the Stags with an 0.47 goals against average, including 0.28 in league games.

CMS will take the field tonight at Pritzlaff hoping against Occidental hoping to advance through to Saturday's finals, which would be held at Pritzlaff again if the Stags can defeat the Tigers this evening.
