CMS Men's Soccer Moves to 3-0 in SCIAC with Shutout Win over Whittier

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Sophomore Ethan Tyng scored the game-winning goal in the 29th minute and the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's soccer team held on from there to capture a 1-0 home win over Whittier on Wednesday afternoon at Pritzlaff Field.
With the win, CMS moves to 6-2 on the season and 3-0 in league play, while handing Whittier (3-3, 2-1) its first league loss. Sophomore goalie Eduardo DeAnda had two saves to pick up his second career shutout.
The Stags came out on their front foot and nearly had a goal in the first 10 minutes. First-year midfielder Evan Kim made a move to the endline and sent a cross into the box, where senior center back Adam Singer was able to get on the back end of it. Singer snapped a header to the far post that came tantalizingly close to putting CMS ahead, but it clanged off the right post and stayed out.
CMS would eventually get the only goal it would need when Tyng came off the bench to score his third of the year. Sophomore midfielder Samay Rahim got the ball in the left side of the penalty area and sent a short pass to the right to Tyng, who was able to bury a shot inside the left post to give CMS a 1-0 lead.
From there the defense held firm, with Singer and junior center back Kevin Proudfoot anchoring the middle, and first-year defender Ben Pelz playing all 90 minutes at outside back in his first career start. DeAnda had both of his saves in the first half, as Whittier was unable to get any of its shots in the second half on frame.
The Stags had three quality chances to take a 2-0 lead in the final 20 minutes, but Whittier goalie Teddy Nickerson had diving saves to deny junior midfielder Nate Huntington, senior forward Cole Smith and freshman forward Jake Allmon to keep the game 1-0.
CMS finished with a 13-8 edge in shots and a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks. Nickerson ended with six saves to help keep the Poets in striking distance.
The Stags will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to Caltech for an 11 a.m. contest.
