Late Goals Lead CMS Men's Soccer to 3-1 Road Win over Occidental

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Senior defender Adam Singer and freshman forward Jake Allmon scored goals 1:01 apart to turn a 1-1 tie late in the second half into a two-goal lead, as the No. 8 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's soccer team was able to come away with a big 3-1 road win over Occidental on Saturday evening.

With the victory, CMS now stands at 5-2 on the season and 2-0 in the SCIAC, opening up league play with a pair of road wins this week after beating Cal Lutheran 2-0 on Wednesday. The last time CMS played at Occidental was in the regular season finale a year ago, when it picked up a 1-0 overtime win to clinch the SCIAC regular season title.

This time around, the Stags didn't have to wait nearly as long to break the 0-0 tie as sophomore William Barton scored just 4:16 into the game to give CMS a quick 1-0 lead. That lead held until midway through the second half, when Adrian Paredes scored for Occidental off a corner kick to get the game back level at a goal apiece.

The Stags broke the tie, though, as senior center back Adam Singer came forward on a free kick and scored in the box off an assist from junior forward Daniel Rohde with just 8:46 left in the game, giving CMS a 2-1 lead. Before Occidental could recover, Allmon scored his first collegiate goal just 1:01 later to make it a 3-1 game and essentially wrap things up for the Stags with 7:45 still showing on the clock.

CMS held a 13-12 edge in shots on the day, while sophomore goalie Jacob Mays earned the win in goal with three saves. Occidental had a narrow 6-3 edge in corner kicks.

The Stags will look to keep the momentum going after starting league play with two road wins when it returns home to Pritzlaff Field on Wednesday to take on Whittier for a 4 p.m. contest.
