After Eighth Straight Shutout, Jacob Mays Named SCIAC Defensive Player of the Week

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Freshman goalie Jacob Mays was named the SCIAC Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week for games through Sunday, Sept. 23, it was announced today by the league office.

Mays earned the honor after having a key role in helping the No. 19-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's soccer team set a new single-season record for longest shutout streak with its seventh and eighth in a row this week. The Stags picked up their seventh shutout in a row with a 3-0 win over Whittier on Wednesday, tying the single-season mark set by the 1988 team and matched in 2004, and then set a new record with its eighth in a row, defeating Redlands 1-0 on the road in a winner-take-all battle for first.

Mays, who has played every minute in goal for the Stags this season and has still not allowed a goal in his collegiate career, picked up four saves in both contests this week. His four saves in the Redlands contest included two in the final 10 minutes, as the Bulldogs pressed forward looking for an equalizer.

It marked the third week in a row that CMS has had the Defensive Player of the Week honor from the SCIAC. Two weeks ago, sophomore defender William Birchard earned the distinction, while last week junior center back Adam Singer earned top defender honors from the league.

CMS will be back in action this week for two more key SCIAC contests, heading on the road to take on Chapman on Wednesday at 4 p.m., and then returning home to face Occidental on Saturday at 7 p.m.
