CMS Men's Soccer Busts Loose for 8-0 Win over Providence Christian

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The CMS men's soccer team had seven different players find the net as it cruised to an 8-0 win over Providence Christian in its opening game of the 2018 season at Pritzlaff Field.

Junior forward Justin Gadalla (CMC '20) was the lone player to score more than once as he netted his second with 38 seconds left in the contest off a feed from Patrick Burke. The Stags scored four times in the last 10 minutes to break it open, with Gadalla netting two of those. Houston Engleman (CMC '22) and Ethan Tyng (CMC '22) each had a goal and an assist in their collegiate debuts.

"It was a good opener for us, everyone got to see some minutes," said Head Coach Matt Edwards. "We had seven different goal scorers, and we looked really deep in a lot of different positions. Excited to get the first game under our belt with a big week coming up."

The Stags narrowly missed on numerous early chances before finally breaking through at the 22:26 mark on a goal from sophomore forward Daniel Rohde (HMC '21). Junior defender William Birchard (CMC '20) set it up with a run up the left side to the end line, and sent a low cross into the middle. Rohde had his first effort blocked, but settled the rebound at the top of the six-yard box and slotted it home for the first goal of the year. 

CMS stretched the margin to 2-0 in the waning minutes of the first half, as sophomore Nate Joseph (CMC '21) scored with 4:46 showing on the clock. Joseph took a short lateral pass from midfielder Harper Rubin (CMC '21) just outside the box, cut past one defender inside the top of the 18, and slotted a shot inside the left post to give the Stags an insurance goal heading into intermission. 

A pair of freshmen then teamed up in their first collegiate contests to effectively put the game away. Tyng cut into the penalty area with the ball, and laid it off to his right, where it was blasted home by William Barton (CMC '22) with 21:14 remaining in the game, stretching the lead to 3-0. Tyng then converted a penalty kick 3:38 later after Barton was fouled in the box, and Gadalla, Engleman, Brandon Theodorou (HMC '21) and Gadalla again added goals in the final minute. 

Jacob Mays (CMC '22) had two saves to get the shutout in his first collegiate contest in goal, although he wasn't tested much after the opening minutes, with the Stags finishing with a 35-4 edge in shots on the day. 

CMC will be right back in action at Pritzlaff Field on Sunday night for a 7 p.m. contest against UC Santa Cruz.
