Five Different Scorers Lead Stags Past Beavers

CLAREMONT, Calif. – On Wednesday night the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Stags rolled to a comfortable 5-0 victory over the visiting Caltech Beavers. The Stags controlled possession throughout the match and outshot the Beavers 36-6 in the contest.

Five different Stags scored with William Birchard (CMC), Adian Johnson (CMC), Patrick Burke (CMC), Justin Gadalla (HMC), and Daniel Rohde (HMC) all finding the back of the net in the contest.

The Stags opened up the match with consistent pressure, but they would not find their first goal of the match until the 33rd minute. Birchard carried the ball down the left side and ripped a shot that ricocheted off a defender and into the back of the net to give the Stags a 1-0 lead. The goal was Birchard's first of his young career.

Just seconds before halftime, CMS would double their lead when Luke Scanlan found Johnson for the header goal. The tally was Johnson's second of the season and put CMS up 2-0 at the half.

Less than two minutes of game play separated the Stags' second and third goals. Just over a minute into the second-half, Patrick Burke put the finishing touches on a double-header play for the Stags. Gadalla headed a pass to Burke, who found the back of the net from point-blank range.

In the 56th minute, Gadalla got a goal of his own when he stripped his defender and went one-on-one with the keeper. Gadalla took a touch to his right and ripped a right-footed strike that gave the Stags a 4-0 lead.

CMS would find their final goal of the evening after a beautiful ball down the sideline by Isaiah Alba (CMC). Alba sent a lofted ball down the left side line that Rohde ran onto, streaking past his defender in the process. Rohde took one touch to goal before beating the keeper to the near post for the beautiful tally.

Following Rohde's goal, the Stags let the attempts fly, firing 10 shots in the contest's final 25 minutes. Despite none of those final attempts finding the goal, the Stags cruised to the five-goal victory. As mentioned, CMS held a 36-6 advantage in shots in the contest and moved to 3-8-1 in the SCIAC with the victory.

The Stags will take the field on Saturday night when they host the Whittier Poets at 7:00 p.m.
