Panthers Top Stags in Midweek SCIAC Tilt

ORANGE, Calif – On Wednesday afternoon the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's soccer team fell to the Chapman Panthers 2-1. After a first-half goal by Chapman, Justin Gadalla (HMC) found the equalizer in the 82nd minute for CMS. Just two minutes later, Charlie Raymond delivered the game-winner for Redlands in the 84th minute with a slotted shot to the far post from the left-side.

Chapman held a slim 15-13 advantage in total shots and an 8-6 edge in attempts on target.

The one-goal defeat is the 10th match that the Stags have played in this season that has been decided by one goal.

CMS registered two corner kicks in the first 11 minutes, but it was the Panthers that recorded the first shot in the contest. That attempt by Chapman in the 10th minute sailed high.

Brandon Theodorou (HMC) took the first shot for CMS in the 26th minute, but, like the Chapman attempt before it, went high over the bar. Play started picking up in the 33rd minute when Chapman's Jonah Tipp tested Connor Gaskin (CMC) with a shot on goal. Gaskin stepped up and made his first save of the afternoon. Just seconds later, CMS put their first shot on target with a strike off the foot of Matthew Swift (CMC), but his attempt was turned away.

The game remained scoreless into the 41st minute when Zev Gollis sent a long ball past the CMS defense. Elliott Braund and Connor Gaskin converged on the ball but Braund tipped the ball over Gaskin's head and into the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.

The one-goal lead remained for the next 40 minutes until the Stags found a moment of brilliance in the 82nd minute. Patrick Burke (CMC) found Justin Gadalla on the right-side for the strike to tie the match at 1-1 late in the contest.

After the Stags found the equalizer, the Panthers turned up the pressure. Just over two minutes later, Kai Howe found Charlie Raymond on the left-side of the box. Raymound took two touches toward goal which brought Gaskin off his line. Raymound then slotted a shot inside the far post to give the Panthers the 2-1 advantage with just six minutes left on the clock.

In the final five minutes, CMS mustered a pair of shots, but were unable to connect. Cole Smith (CMC) set a shot wide in the 87th minute and Henry Kraham (CMC) missed high in the 89th minute. Chapman held on for the 2-1 decision.

The contest was relatively chippy throughout. Between the two sides, the match featured 33 fouls and eight yellow cards.

The Stags will next take the pitch on Saturday night when they travel to Redlands to take on the Bulldogs. Game time is slated for 7:00 p.m.
