Late Comeback Falls Short in Sixth Street Match

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Sixth Street Rivalry rematch finished in favor of the Sagehens on Saturday afternoon, as the Stags took a tough 2-1 loss. Trailing 2-0 for majority of the match, the Stags worked hard to stage a comeback. Isaiah Alba (CMC) managed to bring CMS within one with a goal in the 67th minute, but the Stags' comeback attempt fell short.

Pomona-Pitzer jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead with goals in the fourth and 16th minutes off strikes from Ethan Flor and Taylor Reifert. Both tallies were set up by Peter Rentzepis, who finished with a pair of assists but no shots in the match.

Following the goals, CMS battled to get back in the contest. In the opening half, the Stags fired just two shots, however both attempts went on frame with Yusuke Kobayashi (CMC) in the 24th minute and Nate Joseph (CMC) in the 42nd minute registering attempts.

The Stags continued the pressure after the half with three shots and a pair of corners in the first 20 minutes of the half before finally breaking through in the 67th minute to close the gap to 2-1. Isaiah Alba tallied an unassisted goal for his first tally of the season to bring CMS within one.

Late in the match, the Stags had their best chance to tie the match. Justin Gadalla dove for a header in the 89th minute, but his attempt rattled off the post. On the rebound, his follow-up was blocked. While the Stags earned a corner kick, CMS could not get another shot off and the Sagehens cleared the ball out of danger.

The diving header and follow were the last two quality chances for the Stags as the Sagehens held on for the 2-1 victory.

The Stags will hit the road and face Chapman for the second time this season on Wednesday, October 11 at 4:00 p.m.
