Four Stags recognized by the SCIAC

PASADENA, Calif. – On Tuesday, Nov. 8, the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference announced the All-Conference teams, which included four athletes from the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's soccer team. Freshman Patrick Burke (CMC) was named Newcomer of the year while seniors Mehron Abdi (CMC), Michael Crowley (CMC), and Cole Mora (CMC) represent the Stags on the Second Team.

Burke led the team in game-winning goals with two on the season including the lone goal in the 1-0 victory over Cal Lutheran on Oct. 24. Overall, he scored four goals on 17 shots and with a .588 shot on goal percentage, Burke was a constant threat up top for the Stags.

The senior leadership on CMS returned the Stags to the SCIAC Postseason Tournament for the first time since 2013 and three of those seniors are honored with All-SCIAC awards.

Abdi recorded 17 points this season on seven goals and three assists. He put in the winning goal in overtime vs. Cal Lutheran in their first meeting on Sep. 24. Abdi led the team in shots at 59, averaging just over three per game. In his career, Abdi has 23 goals and a .456 SOG percentage.

Crowley has captained the midfield for CMS for his entire career. This is the second All-SCIAC award for Crowley, who was named Newcomer of the Year and on the First Team back in the 2013 season. Crowley finishes his career with 17 goals and having started 65 of 75 games played. In the 2016 season, he recorded six points including two goals.

Mora has been a relentless presence on the Stags' back line for the past two years. This season, Mora and the defense tallied six shutouts, all in conference play. Most notably, CMS won two 1-0 games at the end of the regular season to earn the No. 4 seed in the SCIAC Postseason tournament.

The Stags wrapped up the 2016 campaign with a 2-0 loss to No. 25 Redlands in the SCIAC Tournament Semifinal. CMS went 11-7-1 and recorded the most wins since 2013.
