Panthers drop Stags 3-0

CLAREMONT, Calif. – In a battle for fourth place in the SCIAC standings, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's soccer team came up short to Chapman University 3-0 on Wednesday night. Senior Mehron Abdi (CMC) led all players with five shots in the game while Grant Fremmerlid scored and had one assist for the Panthers.

Chapman got on the board early as Jake Sarmiento scored on a ball that rebounded off the crossbar and then past CMS junior keeper Grant Gilchrist (CMC).

The Stags maintained control for much of the remainder of the half with two big opportunities on free kicks just outside the box on the right side. In the 31^st, Abdi was fouled making his way across the field and senior Michael Crowley (CMC) a hard low shot on the free kick. Just ten minutes later, on an almost identical foul, sophomore Yusuke Kobayashi (CMC) hit a chip serve that no one was able to get a good foot on to finish.

Down just 1-0 at the half, CMS returned from the break ready to level the score. Kobayashi stayed in the game in the midfield, controlling and distributing nicely while Abdi continued to attack.

Chapman scored twice more in the 60^th and 71^st minutes to put the Panthers up three goals with 19 minutes left on the clock.

CMS kept Panther goalie Sean Augustine busy, especially in the second half. The Stags hit 10 shots with six on target in the second period. Augustine made all six saves, including two in quick succession in the 78^th minute on back-to-back shots by Abdi and freshman Isaiah Alba (CMC).

The Stags are now one point out of fourth place at 7-5-1 in SCIAC. Tied for fourth are Pomona-Pitzer and Chapman, both at 7-4-2. CMS next travels to second place La Verne (8-4-1) on Saturday, Oct. 22 for a game at 7 p.m.
