Two more shutouts for Stags

PASADENA & WHITTIER, Calif. – While on the road for the past two games, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's soccer team recorded its second and third shutouts of the season with the 5-0 victory over Caltech on Saturday and the 1-0 nail-biting win over Whittier on Wednesday night.

Against Caltech, 24 Stags saw playing time on the field as the team scored five goals and out-shot the Beavers 33-3. Freshman Justin Gadalla (HMC) came off the bench and played 64 minutes in the midfield. Classmates Tyler Chen (CMC) and Ben Dibble (CMC) also saw significant time.

Scoring for CMS was junior William Cresap (CMC), senior Michael Crowley (CMC), junior Matthew Swift (CMC), senior Mehron Abdi (CMC) and freshman Cole Smith (CMC). Freshman Isaiah Alba (CMC) earned two assists in the game and sits at No. 2 in the SCIAC for assists. Sophomore Yusuke Kobayashi (CMC) also assisted Crowley for the second goal in the 13th minute.

Junior Grant Gilchrist (CMC) secured the shutout win for CMS playing the second half in goal.

Head coach Matt Edwards was proud of his Stags for coming out with a win on Whittier's home field. The 1-0 game was as tight as the score indicated. CMS edged out Whittier on shots, 22 to 18 as junior Daniel Cui (CMC) earned the shutout win with five saves.

Freshmen played a big role in the mid-week road game. In the 31st minute, Patrick Burke (CMC) scored the Stags' only goal. Senior Elijah Lichtenberg (CMC) overlapped and then served in a ball to Alba who found Burke's feet en route to the goal. Luke Scanlan (CMC) came off the bench and helped CMS move the ball effectively in the midfield.

CMS won the majority of first and second balls, allowing the Stags to maintain possession, especially in the second half.

The Stags (6-1, 4-1 SCIAC) return home to face Cal Lutheran (4-3, 3-2 SCIAC) on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
