Late Penalty Troubles Stags

Redlands, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's soccer team (4-1-0, 2-1-0) lost their first game of the season on the road against No.11/18 University of Redlands (5-0-0, 3-0-0), falling 2-1 after giving up a penalty kick in the 72nd minute. After the Bulldogs scored the opening goal in the 48th minute, junior Jacob Skoll (CMC) answered back two minutes later to level the game. Unfortunately, a foul from junior goalkeeper Daniel Cui (CMC) gave the Bulldogs a penalty kick that would ultimately seal the game.

The Stags struggled to execute their game plan in the first half, managing to take only two shots while the Bulldogs had nine. Redlands looked to threaten and almost had their way towards the end of the half when Spencer Scott found the ball after a corner kick and took a shot at goal, but senior goalkeeper Alex Choi (CMC) was there to block the shot. Antony Chonga followed with a shot of his own, but Choi was there to save it.

CMS regrouped and looked more like themselves in the second half, outshooting Redlands 11 to 9. However, the Bulldogs struck first in the 48th minute when Cameron Doody passed a through ball to Chase Boone who then played one touch past the keeper and slipped the ball into the empty net.

In the 50th minute, the Stags fired back off a corner kick, when the ball deflected off several players in the box until it reached the foot of Skoll, who tapped it in the net.

Senior Mehron Abdi (CMC) almost put the Stags ahead in the 60th minute, but opposing keeper Josh Haskill made a timely save to keep the game at level. 12 minutes later, Daniel Chonga ran the ball into the CMS box, but was fouled by Cui upon entry. Cui was shown the yellow card and Alexander Knox scored the penalty kick to put the Bulldogs ahead.

The Stags will look for their first road victory as they visit Cal-Tech (0-0-4, 0-0-3) on Sept. 17 at 11 a.m.
