Shelton scores game winner in final seconds to beat Pacific 2-1

CLAREMONT, Calif. – With five seconds on the clock, senior Ian Shelton (CMC) punched in the game winner amidst traffic in the box for the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's soccer 2-1 victory over Pacific University (Ore.). In a game that saw more cards than fouls in the second half, CMS pushed through and found a way to maintain their four game win streak to start off the 2016 season.

Pacific got on the board first in the 50^th minute as Weli Alamillo scored his first goal of the season, adding to his two assists from their last game against Redlands. Alamillo went one-on-one with freshman keeper Connor Gaskin (CMC) in the first five minutes of the second half.

The first goal for the Stags came in the 65^th minute. Seniors Mehron Abdi (CMC) and Michael Crowley (CMC) substituted into the game and had an immediate effect on connecting passes in the middle of the field. Shelton took a hard shot that rebounded off the post, right to sophomore Luc Stervinou (CMC). Stervinou finished it for his first goal of the season, tying up the game at 1-1.

As time wound down, the game looked to finish regulation in a draw until the Stags put together another offensive attack in the final five minutes. On two different occasions within two minutes, freshman Patrick Burke (CMC) was served from the right side while he was in the box. Shelton came in for Burke in the 88^th minute and then scored the winning goal in the 90^th minute of play.

The Stags out-shot Pacific 11-7 and Gaskin picked up his first collegiate saves (four) and the win for CMS.

CMS (4-0) now has a five day break after playing four games in eight days. Then, the Stags travel to No. 21 Redlands on Sept. 14 at 7 p.m.
