Tight 2-1 win for Stags over Oxy

CLAREMONT, Calif. – In the 14th minute, senior Mehron Abdi (CMC) got an opportunity to put the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's soccer team on the board with a penalty kick. From then on, the Stags maintained their lead and played 89 minutes of shut out soccer until Occidental scored in the final minute for the 2-1 final score of the SCIAC contest.

Early in the game, sophomore Luc Stervinou (CMC) finished on a breakaway but the goal was retracted due to an offside call. Seconds later, Aidan Johnson (CMC) took another hard shot on frame that was saved by Oxy keeper John Yonamine.

Daniel Cui (CMC) recorded four saves in the game, all in the first half. The final one in the first half came after a CMS handball call just outside the box. Oxy's Ben Simon took the direct kick but was denied by a diving Cui.

Excellent defense in the latter part of the second half, especially by junior Jacob Skoll (CMC), allowed the Stags offense to control the pace. In the 43rd minute, freshman Isaiah Alba (CMC) connected with classmate Cole Smith (CMC) for a header goal, giving CMS the 2-0 lead going into halftime.

The second half was rife with tension resulting in CMS playing with just 10 athletes for the final 21 minutes.

In the 84th minute, the Tigers' offense crashed the box and Stag defender Cole Mora (CMC) deftly headed the ball out of bounds to save an impending shot.

With the win, CMS is 3-0 overall and 2-0 in conference play. Next on the docket is Pacific (Ore.) on Friday, Sept. 9 at 7 p.m. at Pritzlaff Field.
