Burke gets first goals in 4-1 win over PLU

CLAREMONT, Calif. – In front of a large crowd of students for the season opener, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's soccer team supplied the energy needed to push past Pacific Lutheran to win 4-1. Following the tie at halftime, senior Michael Crowley (CMC) knocked in the game winner followed by a pair of insurance goals by freshman Patrick Burke (CMC).

Just over 20 minutes into the game, senior Mehron Abdi (CMC) carried the ball across the middle of the field, evading numerous defenders. Abdi then shot back, across his body and past the diving keeper only to be denied by the left post. A handful of minutes later, Abdi found the back of the net after a rebound from his own shot just a second before. This goal gave the Stags a 1-0 lead 26 minutes into the match.

As the time wound down in the half, a slight defensive lapse allowed the Lutes the opportunity they needed to knot up the game. Eddie Na, PLU's high-scorer from 215, converted on a penalty kick opportunity. The Lutes almost came away with another in the final seconds of the half off a long throw from the far side. Freshman Luke Scanlan (CMC) defended the far post, earning a defensive save.

The intensity and physicality of the game increased in the second half. Early on, Crowley drove in his first goal of the season, served by senior Elijah Lichtenberg (CMC) from the corner.

Burke, in his collegiate debut, notched his first goals as a Stag to bring home the 4-1 victory. The first came off a cross from Abdi on the right and Burke headed it in. Then, in the 84th minute, Burke drove in his second of the match following a hard shot by senior Alex Censullo (CMC).

The Stags ultimately out-shot the Lutes 19-8 and junior Daniel Cui (CMC) earned the win after a three-save match.

CMS hosts Pomona-Pitzer on Monday, Sept. 5 for the first installment of the Sixth Street Rivalry.
