CLAREMONT, Calif. – For the fourth time this season, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's soccer team played 110 minutes without either team scoring a goal. In the Wednesday night matchup between the No. 5 seed La Verne and the No. 6 seeded Stags, the final score was 0-0.
Before the game, CMS had the edge in goals scored (22) and goals against average (0.87) in conference play.
The Stags controlled the pace of the first half, especially in the initial 15 minutes, connecting passes on the right side of the field. At halftime, the shot count was dead even at seven apiece.
The closest opportunities came in the second half for both teams. At the 55 minute mark, Saul Uribe for ULV sent a sharply struck ball just high of the frame.
A few minutes later, Mehron Abdi (CMC) and Taylor Lemmon (CMC) weaved through the Leopards down the right side of the field with Lemmon serving a perfect ball to Hogan Marhoefer (CMC). Marhoefer sent an almost identical shot high in the 68th minute.
Abdi got a chance in the 77th minute. Beating a defender on the left side of the field, Abdi fired a shot on frame that got blocked by another Leopard.
Defensively, the Stags recorded another shutout, their sixth on the season. One outstanding play came in the second overtime as Cole Mora (CMC) was one-on-one with an advancing forward. Mora feinted left and ultimately stole the ball, surely saving what would have been a promising shot.
Time eventually ran out, leaving the game knotted at 0-0.
CMS (5-5-4, 5-4-3 SCIAC) next faces Chapman (7-5-3, 6-4-1 SCIAC) at home on Wednesday, Oct. 21 at 4 p.m. in a double header with the women's team on Pritzlaff Field.
