Top seeded Redlands shuts out Stags

CLAREMONT, Calif. – A slightly different lineup stepped on the field for the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's soccer team on Monday night to take on the top seed in SCIAC, the Redlands Bulldogs. Statistically, the game was relatively even but the result favored Redlands 2-0.

Coming into the match, Redlands and CMS were the top two scoring teams in SCIAC play with 27 and 22 goals respectively on the season. Following the win, Redlands remains at the top of the conference at 8-2-1 in SCIAC. The Stags fell to 5-4-2, just one point behind La Verne, who they face on Wednesday evening.

The Stags came out playing at a high paced clip, forcing the action in their offensive half. Junior William Cresap (CMC) connected twice for CMS early in the game sending one shot wide left while the other one was blocked by a defender.

The Bulldogs got on the board in the 20th minute after a corner kick, served in by Sergio Valencia, pinball-ed around in the box before Jesus Avalos drove it past sophomore keeper Daniel Cui (CMC).

Down by a goal, CMS substituted in a few regular starters, hoping to give the offense a needed boost.

At halftime, the Stags still trailed 1-0 but Redlands punched in another goal in the 56th minute. This time, Kayvon Parsa scored, assisted by Chase Boone. Boone leads the Bulldogs with four assist in conference play.

There were a bevy of opportunities for the Stags in the second half off corner kicks. CMS was awarded seven, all in the second period. Junior midfielders Michael Crowley (CMC) and senior Elijah Lichtenberg (CMC) shared the duties from the corners.

Unfortunately for CMS, Redlands' defense held strong and the game ended in a 2-0 shutout.

The Stags play again at home this week, matching up with La Verne (10-4, 6-4 SCIAC) on Wednesday night, Oct. 14. When the teams played at ULV in CMS' first SCIAC game of the season, the Stags lost 2-1. In that game, freshman Luc Stervinou (CMC) scored his first collegiate goal.
