Six goals in home opener against Caltech

CLAREMONT, Calif. – In the men's soccer home opener, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Stags buried six balls in the back of the net to beat Caltech 6-1 on Wednesday night on Pritzlaff Field. The junior-senior combination of Alex Censullo (CMC) and Hogan Marhoefer (CMC) tallied a total of four goals on the night, ending the scoring drought for the Stags.

It took about 20 minutes for CMS to find their rhythm against the scrappy Caltech players. The Stags had a few opportunities after that including a bicycle shot on goal by Marhoefer off a corner kick in the 27th minute. Marhoefer was the first one to put one in off a free kick awarded to CMS just outside the box.

CMS took a two goal lead just three minutes later when senior Taylor Lemmon (CMC) knocked in a penalty kick in the 40th minute. Seconds before the end of the half, junior Michael Crowley (CMC) connected with classmate Ryan Karle (CMC) and ultimately freshman Aidan Johnson (CMC), converting on a corner kick from the left side.

In the second half, the Stags maintained the momentum and continued the attack. Censullo notched his two goals 17 minutes apart with assists by freshman Luc Stervinou (CMC) and Crowley. Marhoefer's second goal came from the right side as he beat a defender and shot past the advancing keeper, keeping it low.

Marhoefer recorded nine shots in the evening, six of which were on goal. Johnson was next for the Stags with five shots including a pair of headers, one missing just high.

In his own home opener, head coach Matt Edwards was "pleased that the boys controlled the game throughout. We showed flashes of what we are capable of doing when we attack at speed and work together."

Caltech's Alec Sands scored an unassisted goal, putting the Beavers on the board in the 53rd minute.

CMS (1-3-1, 1-2) next faces Whittier (3-1-1, 2-0-1) at home at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 19.
