Stags fight back for 2-1 win over UC Santa Cruz

(Watch video highlights)

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's soccer team faced UC Santa Cruz in their first non-conference game of the season and came out victorious over the Banana Slugs 2-1. The Stags trailed 1-0 at the half but rallied to score twice late in the game to garner the win.

The first half was rife with fouls and yellow cards and only a few shots on goal. UCSC seemed to have the upper hand early in the game: beating CMS to free balls and intercepting passes. Zach Hummel scored for the Banana Slugs in the 13th minute, unassisted. Hummel had a chance right before his goal with a shot off the crossbar that managed to stay out of the goal.

The start of the second half boded well for the Stags. CMS fired off two shots in the first three minutes, one by sophomore Michael Crowley that was saved by the UCSC keeper David Vivian and the other by freshman Jacques Bialostozky that was blocked by a defender.

Bialostozky ultimately scored both the tying goal and the game-winner.  In the 73rd minute, senior Jake Bishop served Bialostozky a beautiful ball that he buried in the lower corner of the net.

Just four minutes later Bialostozky scored again off a heel flick from Crowley to put the Stags ahead 2-1.

The last ten minutes of the game were extremely tense as tempers ran hot for players and fans alike. The Stags held onto their lead to the final whistle for the comeback victory over UC Santa Cruz.

CMS is now 6-4-1 overall, 5-4-1 in conference play. Next up for the Stags is Cal Lutheran (3-7-3, 2-6-2 SCIAC) on Monday, Oct. 13 at 7 pm in Thousand Oaks. CMS faces Sixth Street Rival Pomona-Pitzer Saturday, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m.
