Stags score seven in win over Caltech

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's soccer team scored five goals in the second half alone to ultimately beat Caltech 7-0 in the Wednesday night SCIAC matchup. Freshman Michael Wagenveld, with a hat trick on the night, connected with sophomore Alex Censullo for two of his goals.

Wagenveld was the first Stag to score just 12 minutes into the game. After the initial excitement, the game settled down for about 30 minutes before CMS scored again.

This time, junior Hogan Marhoefer took a shot that ricocheted off the left post right to sophomore Michael Crowley's expecting feet. Crowley put it in for CMS' second goal in the 44th minute.

At the start of the second half, Wagenveld added two more with the help of sophomore William Cresap and Censullo again.

In the final five minutes of play the Stags were relentless and scored three goals, two of them by sophomore Dylan Saffer. Censullo rounded out the scoring with his first goal on the year.

Wagenveld's goals were not only his first on the season but also first in his collegiate carreer. Both Cresap and Censullo each had two assists during the game. The Stags took 41 shots on the night, 20 of which were on frame.

For Caltech, the star of the show was goal keeper John David Feist. Feist recorded 13 saves during the game and came up big time and time again for the Beavers.

The Stags (3-1-1, 3-1-1) travel to Whittier (4-2-1, 2-2-1) this Saturday, Sept. 27 to play the Poets at 4 p.m.
