Season, SCIAC-opener for CMS ends in double overtime tie with Pomona-Pitzer

CLAREMONT, Calif. – With a couple of exhibition matches under its belt, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's soccer team opened its 2014 regular season and conference season with a 1-1, double overtime tie against its cross-street rival Pomona-Pitzer on Sept. 10 at Pomona's field.

The two teams played a scoreless first half with CMS outshooting Pomona-Pitzer 8-4 in the first 45 minutes. It wasn't until Pomona-Pitzer's Geordie Marriner scored in the 53rd minute to take a 1-0 lead that either team scored.

Pomona-Pitzer (2-1-1, 0-0-1) maintained the one-score lead until the 80th minute when CMS tied it up on a goal by sophomore midfielder Michael Crowley that came off a free kick from junior forward Taylor Lemmon which Crowley deflected in.

Over the final 10 minutes of regulation, the CMS (0-0-1, 0-0-1) defense kept Pomona-Pitzer from scoring, despite playing a man down. Sophomore goalie Alex Choi came up with two of his six saves of the match during the final 10 minutes of regulation. In total, the two teams combined for nine yellow cards and two red cards.

CMS played with 10 in the first overtime and both teams played a man down for the majority of the second overtime. CMS did not manage a shot in the first overtime. Its best opportunities to score the game-winner came in the second overtime as the CMS offense attempted three shots, two of which were saved by Pomona-Pitzer goalie Nigel Brady.

CMS has a couple of days off from competition and are back in action on Saturday, Sept. 13 at home against Cal Lutheran at 4 p.m.
