Top-seeded CMS falls to Chapman in SCIAC Postseason Tournament semifinal

CLAREMONT, Calif. – A pair of goals by Chapman University in the final 18 minutes of the match gave Chapman a 2-1 win over the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's soccer team in a SCIAC Postseason Tournament semifinal on Wednesday night at Pritzlaff Field. No. 4 seed Chapman (12-7-2, 9-6-1) advances to face No. 3 seed Cal Lutheran in the SCIAC Postseason Tournament final on Saturday, while CMS is eliminated from the conference tournament.

Less than a minute into the match, CMS took a 1-0 lead on a goal by freshman M Mehron Abdi off an assist from freshman M Michael Crowley with 50 seconds gone by.

In the second half, CMS (14-6-1,12-3-1) outshot Chapman 16-5, but Chapman made good on the opportunities it had. In the 73rd minute, Chapman was awarded a penalty kick and senior Nick Echeverry capitalized with the goal to even the score at 1-1.

Then with just under two minutes remaining in the match, junior Gabe Recht-Appel gained possession of a loose ball in front of the net and scored the game-winner for Chapman. After Chapman's goal, CMS kept pressure on the Chapman defense, but could not find the back of the net as a shot by junior D Jaison Kimura sailed high with 50 seconds remaining.

Sophomore goalie Nick Berardi had a match-high seven saves for Chapman.
