CMS Men's Golf Earns Fifth Place at Bulldog Invitational

GolfStat Scoring

REDLANDS, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's golf team rallied from 11 shots back to within three of the lead at one point during Tuesday's third and final round, but ended up settling for a fifth-place finish at the Bulldog Fall Invitational, hosted by Redlands.

CMS shot a 278 (-2) as a team on Tuesday, its lowest total of the tournament, even surpassing the 279 from the first round on Monday, when the Stags built a four-shot lead. In between, the 292 on Monday's second round proved to be too much to overcome, as CMS ended up at +9, six shots off the lead.

The Stags made a go of it, though, with Vikram Chatterjee leading the charge, finishing at -3 on Tuesday with a 67, tying for the low round for any Stag over the 54 holes. Yuefeng (Michael) Ma and Riley La both shot even par on Tursday, with Kevin Jiang coming in at +1, to give the Stags a -2 collectively, one of four teams to shoot in the red on Tuesday (all of which were from the SCIAC, led by a -6 from Cal Lutheran). Host Redlands shot a -5 on Tuesday to catch Monday leader Willamette and win by one stroke (+3 to +4), with Schreiner close behind in third at +5.

Ma finished at -1 for the tournament to place seventh in the field, beginning his sophomore season with a top-10 finish after winning the SCIAC individual title last year (as well as the league's Athlete of the Year honor). Lai finished just outside the top 10 with a tie for 11th, playing a combined -1 over his last two rounds.

Chatterjee jumped up 20 spots with his 67 to come in a tie for 21st place with Jiang, with teammates Will Parker and Alex Yun one shot ahead in a tie for 15th (although both were playing as individuals and did not factor into the CMS team score).

The Stags will be back in action on Oct. 3-4 when they conclude their fall schedule at the Ottawa Fall Invitational in Surprise, Arizona.
